Team Comics: Avengers, Authority, and X-Men

I feel a little like my brother about 10 years ago. He used to do his homework and then not turn it in. Only I’m here, writing blog posts and then not posting them.

This issue was really an epilogue to the MVP story. It wasn’t the best issue; however, I do think it addresses the strengths of this series.

I really think this comic’s strength is introducing new characters and showing how in the military, there’s really no one to blame when it comes to orders you’ve been given. I’m glad to see that MVP’s death, which happened in what the first or second issue, has finally come to light for all the public to hear about and also admitting to his cloning. Maybe Cloud 9 will get some of her spunk back.

But the Gauntlet was right; no one was really responsible for his death, and because of the Skrulls, there isn’t even a higher up to place the responsibility for the mistake on. I think this series really fits in nicely with current events and dealing with who is responsible for the atrocities surrounding the Iraq War.

I think this comic was the most disappointing so far in the relaunch. They finally get to telling the backstory about what happened when the apocalypse hit, and well, it was kind of disappointing. It rather like the writers hadn’t filled in a lot of gaps for themselves and instead of fleshing the story out, were afraid that they were going to cause bad continuity errors so they aired on the side of caution and showing, not telling, the story.

Though it wouldn’t surprise me if it had something to do with Albion. Can’t wait to see Jenny Quantum return and fry Jenny Spark’s ex one last time.

Can we have the Dodsons back on the art team instead of Land? I would like to be able to tell the different between the faces of Allison Blaire, Emma Frost, Pixie, etc.

Speaking of Pixie, I really love how Fraction’s writing her. I love to see her kicking ass in the Danger Room while everyone else was planning silent protests about mutant reproduction rights and also to see her partying at Dazzler’s concert and maybe being a little drunk too.

Northstar is super hilarious, so I’m glad they added him to the team. I hope he and Wolverine get into a fight over which hockey team they’re rooting for.

I really love this all-female baddie team. However, they are all characters from my gaps on X-Men continuity so I don’t know really enough about them (besides what Wikipedia tells me) that I feel as if I can comment on their actions/behaviors.

I’m just not sure how believable it is that Emma Frost would be caught completely off-guard. Especially since shirtless Scott was sleeping on the couch.

  1. I had the chance to catch up on Uncanny X-Men! I have to agree with you, most of Land’s art is annoying — but I might be a bit biased, because I love Terry Dodson’s art.

Fraction’s been getting mixed reviews on his recent writings (including in non-X-Men stuff) and I have to say, I actually enjoy his writing. I think it’s his occasional tongue-in-cheek line that makes me like him even more than what the masses are saying. But then again, I’ve always liked writers and artists who don’t take themselves too seriously.
