Queer Comic Characters: Apollo (Oct 31st)

I kicked off the month with Midnighter, so it seems fitting to end it with Midnighter’s husband Apollo. This also makes Apollo the fourth queer character from the Authority to grace my blog for LGBT History Month.

Apollo

Apollo

Apollo and Midnighter are presented as opposites of one another and opposites attract. Apollo wears white and is modeled after Superman compared to Midnighter’s black and Batman-like attitude. Apollo’s generally more jovial and light-hearted. He’s also solar powered; and his powers increase with more sunlight (even directly from being inside the sun), and without sunlight, he starts to power down. (more…)

Queer Comic Book Characters: Swift (Oct 14th)

Apollo and Midnighter may be the most famous queer characters in The Authority, but they aren’t the only ones. They’re just in good company. This reminds me of a time my mom asked me if all my friends are gay. No, mom, they aren’t all gay; we’re just magnetic to tolerant people, who have a high likelihood of also being gay.

Shen Li-Min (Swift)

Swift

Swift is a bisexual Buddhist Tibetan. But what makes her even cooler is that she has talon and wings that give her super fast flying powers and other super senses. Oh, no, wait, that’s not what makes her the coolest. What makes Swift the coolest is that she’s the only character not created by Warren Ellis to make it onto The Authority’s roster. That’s right, even Ellis know she’s awesome. (more…)

Queer Comic Book Characters: Midnighter (Oct 1st)

October is LGBTQ History Month, and back when I was in college, the LGBTQA group I led did a calendar project which featured one famous queer person per day. My favorite parts of this project was when people would be shocked to find out that one of their beloved celebrities was gay. (Don’t worry, we also included mathematicians, writers, politicians, and more for some variety.) I thought I’d take this time to talk about some of my favorite queer comic book characters.

Starting out with my second favorite comic book character (after She-Hulk, of course):

Midnighter

Midnighter

Created by Warren Ellis, Midnighter first appeared in Wildstorm’s Stormwatch Vol 2 #4. Midnighter is a genetically-engineered superhero, who has super healing; implants in his brain which let him predict an opponent’s fighting moves before the battle starts; and other enhancements such as an axillary heart. In other words, he’s the muscle and kills lots of super villains as part of the Authority. (more…)
