Dolltopia by Abby Denson

I loved Dolltopia. I didn’t know what to make of it when I first picked it up. But it’s not just a story about dolls who are escaping from being dolls; it’s not just another Toy Story, only about Barbie instead of Woody and Buzz.

Instead, Denson sculpts this into a tale of self-expression. Of coming into one’s own. And of expressions of gender and how there is no right or wrong way to be a boy or a girl or something else. The commentary on surgery, inner and outer beauty, and loving yourself were beautiful done. I highly recommend Dolltopia, and I think it’s a great book to give a kid too.

Denson’s limited color palette of black, white, and hot pink works awesomely to express the doll’s world. And it also makes color have less of a gendered meaning, which I believe, helps the book make smarter commentary on gender. Continue reading “Dolltopia Graphic Novel Review”
